Mienert received a PhD from the University of Kiel. He was at research institutions in the US at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory (1981-1982), at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (1985-1988), and in Germany at the GEOMAR marine research center at Kiel University (1988-1998). He is now a full professor in Applied Geophysics & Arctic Marine Geology at the Department of Geology at the University of Tromsø. His present research focuses on the development of glaciated and non-glaciated margins regarding stability zones of both hydrates and sediments inferred from geophysical and geological records.) http://www.ig.uit.no/home/juergen/
Centre for Arctic Gas Hydrate, Environment and Climate web site, April 6, 2017: (Jürgen Mienert has been professor of arctic marine geology and applied geophysics at the Department of Geology, UiT, since August 1998. Jürgen received his master and doctoral degree at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel, Germany, in 1981 and 1985 respectively. He received a DAAD fellowship from 1981-1982, doing marine geophysical research at Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory (L-DGO) of Columbia University, New York, USA. After completing his PhD he joined the Department of Geology and Geophysics at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), USA, as an institutional postdoctoral fellow. In 1988 he returned to Kiel and GEOMAR, and was leading Marine Geophysics at the SFB 313 at the Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel.) https://cage.uit.no/research-team/jurgen-mienert/
